The gentle-giant, people-loving Rottweiler named Hero enjoyed being around children most of all. Hero was a certified Dog Scout of America™. He was a therapy dog. He and Heddie served in many animal-assisted therapy roles. They taught children to read at schools and libraries, provided support and encouragement for children with cancer and their families in hospitals, and provided therapy for children and families in domestic-violence shelters. They were dispatched by NAACR and assigned through the American Red Cross to assist with the mental-health unit after the EF5 tornado hit Parkersburg, Iowa.

Hero will never be forgotten by all who were fortunate enough to have interacted with him and Heddie. His achievements, encouragement, compassion, and support will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him in his all-too-short life.

Heddie is a city girl with a country heart. She’s lived with her husband, Ron, for over 40 years in the country in Missouri. They have two grown daughters.

She found her place working with children and animals, through animal-assisted therapy and the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction (ReCHAI). She’s worked with thousands of children at schools, libraries, summer camps, special-needs programs, 4H, Girl and Boy Scouts, children’s cancer wards in hospitals, and domestic-violence shelters. Their big black dog, Hero, was an integral part of their interactions.

Heddie is an instructor and evaluator for a therapy-animal organization. She also teaches offenders to train and socialize shelter dogs through Missouri Puppies for Parole. She helps others understand canine behavior. As a Professional Humane Educator, her classes are in high demand.

Her greatest joy is spending time with her grandchildren. Their joy is infectious and their laughter contagious. It is one of the great blessings in life.
